• PHASE 1 - Begun in 2003, Phase I was comprised of Project Design and Right of Way Construction. The WOW Board initiated and completed an RFP process and signed a contract with Houston landscape architect Keiji Asakura to guide our organization and the community through the landscape design process. Mr. Asakura has created a pedestrian-friendly, tree-shaded concept for the area surrounding the traffic-calming roundabout. The WOW Roundabout’s close proximity to Memorial Park has greatly informed our vision of a “green” and naturalistic environment as native botanical specimens play the primary role in the landscape design. Using native plants and an awareness of water conservation, the design complements the historic 180 year-old post oak tree that figures prominently at the Roundabout center island.
During this same time, WOW Roundabout entered into a contract with the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County to administer an artist search. CACHHC executed an RFP process that included an invitation to submit, jury and final artist selection. The finalist chosen by the WOW Board was Houston-based sculptor Tim Glover with his concept, “Light Garden”.
The Right of Way Construction that transformed the street and traffic pattern began in February 2004 by the City of Houston and was completed in 2006.
