NATIVE GRASSES AND AREA ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP PROGRAM Ornamental, native grasses figure very prominently in the WOW Roundabout project. Per the original design by our landscape architect, Keiji Asakura, the Center Post Oak Tree Island was planted earlier this spring with two types of native grasses. The stunning“ grassy hill” lies outside the post oak tree drip line, gently descends to the paved street.
Our spring event was very successful with the help of many community friends. We have a new planting bed to be very proud of and the gulf coast muhly and little blue stem grasses are growing very well. Check out the QuickTime collection of photos - this is a high res version that I hope will serve easily on all systems. WOW: THE MOVIE
Site preparation commenced in Spring 2008 with the destruction the existing turf grass and weeds. The City of Houston Department of Parks + Recreaction deposited mulch created from local trees and shrubs covering the entire planting area. Mulching serves many purposes – it kills unwanted grasses and weeds; prevents erosion; and provides nutrients to the soil through decomposition.
By Spring 2009 we were ready to plant approximately 3000 small grass plugs! In addition to the planting, WOW included an area environmental clean-up addressing unsightly and unsafe situations in the immediate area. Partners and sponsors in this transforming event included:
Camp Logan Civic Club,Crestwood / Glencove Civic Club, Rice Military Civic Club, Woodcrest Neighborhood Civic Association, SuperNeighborhood 22 - Washington Avenue / Memorial, City of Houston Parks + Recreation, Keep Houston Beautiful, HLS Enterprises, City of Houston Planning + Development, Crosby State Bank, Shipley DoNuts, Candelari's Pizzeria, Susan Vaughan Foundation, HPD, Volunteers from the four surrounding neighborhoods and WOW Board and Advisory Board members.
Our tradition of community partnership continues at the Roundabout!
