THE GARDEN PROJECT Ornamental, native grasses figure very prominently in the WOW Roundabout project. As originally designed by our landscape architect, Keiji Asakura, the Center Post Oak Tree Island will be planted with three types of native grasses. The “grassy hill” lies outside the post oak tree drip line, gently descends to the paved street and will be accented by boulders. Once the grasses achieve their full height after one growing season, the center tree circle will be even more stunning. WHEN Site preparation will commence Spring '08 by destroying the existing turf grass and weeds. For several months afterwards, mulch created from local trees and shrubs will cover the entire planting area. The mulching serves many purposes – to further kill unwanted grasses and weeds; to prevent erosion; and to provide nutrients into the soil through decomposition. WHO Our tradition of community partnership continues at the Roundabout. Below is a list of volunteers and sponsoring entities for this project. City of Houston Parks and Recreation Private Donor Camp Logan Civic Club Crestwood Civic Club Rice Military Civic Club Woodcrest Civic Association HOW Neighborhood representatives will coordinate a small group of resident volunteers who will plant native grass plugs in the Fall of 2008. In conjunction with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department we will provide grass plugs, planting instructions, bed preparation materials, safety orientation, refreshments and general project oversight and management. The accent boulders will be located and installed before planting. The project should take no more than 3- 4 hours and will culminate with a special event. MORE . . . LIGHT SCULPTURE WOW is applying for foundation support to match a recent large grant to begin construction of 3 light sculptures. One will reside in the Camp Logan garden area visible to traffic on Westcott approaching the Roundabout from I-10. The other sculptures will frame the gateway to the Roundabout from downtown Washingon Ave. We expect completion before the end of 2008.
NEW CONSTRUCTION FOR TRUCK SKIRT WOW is working with the City of Houston to develop a permanent solution to the occasional incursion of very large trucks into the circle of the Roundabout. Our criteria include minimal repair costs for the future, and aesthetic coordination with the other features of the Roundabout.
